E-Mongolia Adheres to WCAG Web Accessibility Standards and Introduces Sign Language Interpretation

Globally, over 70 million people use sign language for communication, yet in Mongolia, the number of sign language interpreters is under 20. This disparity underscores the need to improve access to digital government services for citizens with special needs. In response, the E-Mongolia system has integrated sign language interpreters, ensuring easier and more inclusive access to government services for individuals with hearing impairments.

As of 2024, approximately 115,000 people in Mongolia live with disabilities, making up 3.3% of the population. Out of these, 49,996 individuals now access government services more efficiently through the E-Mongolia system.

The "E-Mongolia Academy" state owned enterprise has worked diligently to make the platform more accessible by adhering to international WCAG guidelines. As a result, the system is now more inclusive. For example, 12,892 visually impaired citizens can access services with the help of screen reader software. Furthermore, the introduction of captioning and sign language interpretation has significantly expanded the availability of information and services, promoting equality and timeliness for individuals with special needs.

The latest development in the E-Mongolia system enables hearing-impaired citizens to receive consultations and information through the "Sign Language Interpreter" service. This initiative represents a significant step towards ensuring social equality and providing equal digital access to all citizens.

Hearing-impaired individuals can now connect to a sign language interpreter through the "Visual Call" service on the 1111-2 hotline to receive real-time information. They can also stay updated on new services and other important details via the official E-Mongolia Facebook page.

Moving forward, E-Mongolia remains committed to ensuring that all citizens—regardless of ability—can easily access government services. The platform will continue to lead the digital transformation of public services in Mongolia by prioritizing inclusivity, efficiency, and accessibility.
